Part III of expat Turner Sparks' journey into the relief effort underway in Sichuan. In this post Turner talks about the contrast between what the media is saying and what the feeling on the ground is. Includes a number of photos from the front lines.

Follow Turner Sparks, an American expat living in Jiangsu, as he and his friend Jake trek the 1,000 km from Suzhou to Chengdu to aid in the earthquake relief efforts there. This is part one of a multi-part series.

I did a quick search to find the origin of the term "quake lake" in its current usage, and made a surprising discovery... quake lake seems to have spread like a disease from one brilliant mind at Xinhua, quickly attaching itself to respectable journalists across the globe. I even put together a little chart to track the term's progression.

MIANYANG, CHINA — The Chinese government said Monday that 158 relief workers had been killed in landslides over the last three days, buried in mud as they tried to repair roads in some of the worst-hit areas. The announcement came on a day when the country paused for three minutes of silence to mourn the deaths of tens of thousands of people from last week’s earthquake.
